Why You Need a Side Hobby

“Creativity is the way I share my soul with the world.” -Brene Brown

Even if you have a job that challenges you and helps you grow, odds are that you have other interests or passions outside of work. Having a hobby, or something that you are passionate about, is an important part of developing who you are as a person.

Our hobbies change over time too. Some people are into collecting wooden ducks one day, and then switch over to collecting lamps. The great thing about having a hobby is that it can be whatever you want it to be, so long as it’s something you are interested in and want to give some time to.

Here are a few reasons why I think having a hobby is so important:

Hobbies let you get your creative juices flowing.

Depending on the type or work you do and the type of person you are, you might crave an outlet outside of work that lets you be more creative. Lots of hobbies allow you to spark your creativity, whether that’s art, writing, crafting, video-making, etc. Like the quote says above, creativity allows us to create something that is uniquely us. It feels good and almost healing, really, to create.

Hobbies keep you independent.

When you have a passion that is your own, it helps you realize how amazing you truly are. You know that you have a little piece of yourself that is yours alone. Yes, I made this beautiful piece of art all on my own. Yes, did write that book. It is empowering! As you start having more serious relationships too, it helps keep you your own person. I love my early Sunday mornings when I sit down to write my blog posts for the week while my significant other sleeps. It is time to myself where I can be alone and completely immersed in my hobby.

Hobbies challenge you and help you learn new things.

Some hobbies are a bit more low-key than others, granted. But many creative hobbies have a challenging aspect to them, whether that’s drawing a figure just right, or baking the perfect batch of cookies. While the goal of a hobby shouldn’t be perfection per se, it should at least grow you in some way. Even if your hobby is bubble baths, perhaps it is growing you into a more calm person who values their personal time.

And of course, hobbies are fun!

Hobbies let you get out of your own head for a little while. Even if it’s just for 30 minutes, exercising your passions helps you push the rest of the crap in your life to the side. Even more amazing, sometimes in our hobbies, we realize that our hobby is what we really want to do with our lives. And how cool is that?

Overall, it really doesn’t matter what hobby you have, as long as you do have one. For example, my main hobby is blogging of course, but I’ve also gotten into this weird thing about houseplants and interior design. Which is cool, it’s fine. What are some things you are passionate about that could easily be turned into a hobby?
