Guest Post: 5 Paranormal Romances You Should Read this Summer

Zoe is a book blogger at Wayward Reviews. She loves devouring all types of novels but is a sucker for a Paranormal Romance. When she is not devouring books left, right and center, she is slinging cards, traveling and generally trying to live her best life surrounded by the people and things she loves. Everyone (well, not everyone, but you know who you are!) loves a good summer romance novel during the holidays. I am sure we can all relate to arriving at the airport only to find yourself lingering in the bookshop. Next minute, you have brought two summer romance reads for your holiday.

Yet, it can be tiring reading the same sweet romance with pretty much the same scenario. Yes, each book will be different than the next…but I find the main characters fall into two categories of hero/anti-hero or independent/lonely. So for the last two summers, I have chosen to read Paranormal Romances while on holiday, and that was the best decision I made!

I know not many people like Paranormal Romance, I get it. Some are based on strange worlds, there are magical beings, shapeshifters and creatures of all kinds. They can be very unlike other chick lit’s that are based around everyday life.

But let me try to convince you to read at least one of my recommendations. I can guarantee you will be smiling, laughing or swooning by the end of them. We who read summer romance novels are generally looking for a little place to escape to while we are on holiday. So why not go out of this world and read something unusual?

When I compiled this list, I chose books that have great storylines to hook you in, characters who you develop attachments to and chemistry. After all, what is the point of reading a romance novel if there is no “romance”?! I mean, how many chick lits have we read and barely understand why the two main characters ended up together?

So without further ado, here are my top 5 Summer Paranormal Reads!

You Slay Me by Katie McAlister51WBHledDLL._SX308_BO1204203200_

“The realm of the paranormal in this sexy, funny romance that pits Seattle-based Aisling Grey against Drake Vireo, a seriously handsome Parisian dragon in human form. In her job as courier, Aisling is to deliver a precious demonic artifact to a Mme. Deauxville in Paris, but she finds Madame freshly dead, surrounded by a circle of ash.”

A fast-paced story with a sassy heroine who you will fall in love with. Her determination to prove herself and her lack of fear make this a fun read. The chemistry sizzles but doesn’t overwhelm the quirky storyline; this a great light PNR read to sink your teeth into.

Here Be Sexist Vampires – Suzanne Wright41cob8GoBlL

“Sam Parker is a vampire with a gift so strong and substantial that she is invited to partake in a test for a place in the Grand High Master Vampire’s private army. She finds that not only has the army never included a woman, but it has never included a Sventé vampire; a breed that is regarded by the super strong Pagori breed and the hypnotically beautiful Keja breed to be too tame and human-like”

I confess the blurb makes the story sound quite heavy, when in fact it has a strong undertone of humor to it. Unlike Aisling Grey, Sam is a confident woman who works hard to make the best out of a bad situation. Her girl boss ways definitely get you rooting for her.

Silver Silence by Nalini Singh51yVHLwnSIL._SX329_BO1204203200_

“Control. Precision. Family. These are the principles that drive Silver Mercant. At a time when the fledgling Trinity Accord seeks to unite a divided world, with Silver playing a crucial role as director of a worldwide emergency response network, wildness and chaos are the last things she needs in her life. But that’s exactly what Valentin Nikolaev, alpha of the StoneWater bears, brings with him.”

Moving further into the Paranormal, Silver Silence is a world of changelings, humans and psychic beings known as Psy. Nalini is a master at Paranormal Romance; she blends effortlessly all elements that make a great PNR. You will get caught up in this world, the characters stories are compelling and the fact she writes series will make you hunger for more.

Her Guardian Angel by Larissa Ione35063388

“After a difficult childhood and a turbulent stint in the military, Declan Burke finally got his act together. Now he’s a battle-hardened professional bodyguard who takes his job at McKay-Taggart seriously and his playtime – and his playmates – just as seriously. One thing he never does, however, is mix business with pleasure. But when the mysterious, gorgeous Suzanne D’Angelo needs his protection from a stalker, his desire for her burns out of control, tempting him to break all the rules…even as he’s drawn into a dark, dangerous world he didn’t know existed.”

Adding angels to the mix. Larissa Ione’s world is dark, moody and oh so sinful. The world building is effortless; I was pleasantly surprised at how well she introduced the setting and the pace she set out in the book. I would like to point out that this is a novella, so it’s a quick read!

Moonshadow – Thea Harrison51nAnAv-oEL

“Her past is a blank, her future uncertain….Recovering from a shooting, LAPD witch consultant Sophie Ross leaves her job and travels to the U.K. to search for answers about her childhood. When she encounters a Daoine Sidhe knight of the Dark Court, she becomes entangled in an ancient hatred between two arcane forces.”

The last book in this list and boy is it a doozie! If you are wanting to dive into a strong Paranormal Romance then Thea Harrison is your lady. The world building is fantastic and there are strong main characters and hot steamy moments that make you blush.  I recommend this to a reader who is ready to dive head first.

I have to admit romance is my least fave genre but I’m trying to read more books in genres I don’t normally read. Moonshadow sounds like one I’d love. I’ll definitely be adding it to my TBR!

I don’t think I’ve ever read a paranormal romance beyond the realms of books like Twilight but you have me intrigued. I do need to start trying new genres. I might give You Slay Me a go 🙂 I was given a book called Darcy’s Desire which is meant to be basically sexy vampire pride & prejudice so I should probably read that one too!

oh wow….you have such a wonderful list of PNR to read. Silver Silence was AMAZING—Nalini Singh is such pure talent and I love the way she handles pack dynamics. It makes me wish I was a changeling hehe

I have always enjoyed reading Paranormal Romance though, Christine Feehan got me hooked and I just devour it. But then I will read anything with a love story and happy ending. Katie MacAlister is a hoot to read but haven’t read her in a long while. Suzanne Wright is so fun, strong and feisty heroines with some unique plots. I understand that the genre isn’t for everyone though.
