Note: Serious spoilers below! If you’re an OwlCrate subscriber and you haven’t gotten your November box yet, don’t read this post! (Unless you don’t mind spoilers.)
Holy cow, I was so excited to sign up for OwlCrate and get my first box and boy, it did not disappoint!
November’s theme was “Rise From the Ashes” so I knew the items and the book would probably revolve around redemption and badassery. I also happened to figure out what the book was before getting my box but more on that later!
The Book: Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan
I am so excited to be reading this book the same month it came out. That just never seems to happen for me. When I first heard about it, I dismissed it, even though I like romances and fantasies because I’d heard people really play up the F/F romance side of it and I just wasn’t sure I would enjoy it. Well, that turned out to be a pretty shallow judgment because I started the book the other night and I got through a solid half of the book without leaving my reading chair. This book is getting talk for all the right reasons.
Just in case the book is new to you, Girls of Paper and Fire is about a girl named Lei in a magical land controlled by demons. Every year, 8 human girls are chosen to serve as concubines to the demon king. Guess who gets chosen this year? Along her journey, Lei faces horror and suffering, but also redemption and love where she never expected it. I’ll stop there but it really is turning out to be a gem. A review post will come soon!
Oh, and I knew this was the book for the month because OwlCrate’s summary mentioned a demon king and concubines and well, there are not many books with those things in them.
Skull planter-I don’t have a photo of this because I took it right to work. I might put a succulent in it. This item might rock other people’s boats, but I don’t really like skull decor.
Wax seal kit-This kit is so simple and cute! And the stamp is a little book! I love how the wax is purple, instead of the traditional red. I’m not entirely sure how I’ll welt the wax without getting it all over everything, but I will sure try. I’m planning to use it on my holiday cards, actually. I just think it’d be so cool to get a card with a wax seal.
An Ember in the Ashes pillowcase-I was a bit surprised that this was for a throw pillow and not a bed pillowcase. Not a big deal but I think it would have been nice to have a regular-size pillowcase.
Wish bracelet craft kit-This paper craft kit looks cute and good for a rainy day when you just want to stay inside and craft. I already know my cat Mooney is going to have a field day when I open this up.
Dumbledore and Fawkes sticker- This made me so happy. I feel like Fawkes and Dumbledore are a bit understated in the HP series and I always thought they were a cool pair. This sticker went right onto my purple laptop, which I use for blogging!
I also forgot to mention that each box also comes with a mini booklet with fun activities and interviews with the author and the designers of some of the goodies. And each hardback is signed! Something about getting a signed copy just makes you feel so special, like you want to treasure that book forever.
Overall, I give this OwlCrate box an 8/10. The book choice was my favorite and I liked the items overall, but none of them blew my socks off. I think I’ll get use out of the wax seal kit but skull decor isn’t really my thing so I’m not sure I’ll enjoy the planter that much.
Do you subscribe to OwlCrate or another YA box? I’d love to hear what you think of this month’s book and goodies!
